About The Institution

Curtin has expanded rapidly into the globally recognised university it is today. Acknowledged as a destination of choice for WA students and ranked in the top one per cent in the world, Curtin continues to embrace the philosophy of our namesake John Curtin to “look ever forward”. This mantra has instilled a culture of teaching and research excellence and innovation and continues to encourage staff and students to make tomorrow better.

Ranked among the world’s best

Curtin’s growing reputation has seen the university rapidly rise up the international rankings in recent years. Curtin ranks in the 351-400 band in the 2018 Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THEWUR) and was ranked 26th in the 2016 THEWUR: 200 Most International Universities in the World ranking. In the 2017 Times Higher Education Asia-Pacific University Rankings, Curtin ranks 69th out of 243 institutions and is placed 25th in Australia.

Research that drives innovation

As a leading research institution renowned for our strength in minerals and energy, defence, data analytics and emerging technologies, health sciences, astronomy, sustainable development and agriculture, Curtin engages in collaborative research with other reputable institutions and industry to produce research outcomes that positively impact local and global communities.

The University leads a number of major international research projects and is involved with more than 70 research centres and collaborations, including the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy, the Centre for Crop and Disease Management and Innovation Central Perth.

Curtin campuses

Curtin is now a global university, with campuses in Western Australia (Perth city), regional Western Australia (Kalgoorlie), Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai, as well as course delivery through more than 90 partner institutions worldwide.

Our newest campus in Dubai is a cultural hub where members of the community can study, work and socialise together. It provides flexible access to highly regarded programs for future students within the region, including the Middle East, India, Africa and Central Asia, and will provide opportunities for students from other Curtin campuses to complete part of their studies in Dubai.

Educational partnerships

The Aberdeen-Curtin Alliance was established in early 2017, combining 500 years of academic strength, history and tradition at Scotland’s University of Aberdeen with the ambition and innovation of Curtin University. It draws on the strengths of both universities to deliver high-impact research and innovative coursework programs across the business, health sciences, medicine, engineering, energy and creative arts. The alliance has also led to the creation of the Global Energy Institute, to respond to the challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector.

Curtin’s relationship with Open Universities Australia (OUA) allows eligible students to study selected Curtin courses online. The partnership gives students the opportunity to complete their course faster, as many OUA undergraduate courses have no academic prerequisites. Students graduate with the same Curtin degree as those who study directly through Curtin.

Founded by Harvard and MIT in 2012, edX is an online learning destination and MOOC (massive open online course) provider that delivers university-level short courses to a global student body, for free. The partnership with edX provides Curtin with the opportunity to significantly increase global engagement and to showcase excellence and expertise in a number of disciplines. In some instances, a combination of selected MOOCs can form a ‘Micromaster’ which, once completed and verified, can provide credit into selected Curtin postgraduate courses.

Learning reinvented

Curtin’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses are regularly reviewed by industry, business and government to ensure graduates are prepared for today’s changing global market.

The University has also incorporated work integrated learning activities and introduced technology-rich environments that recreate real workplaces, such as a simulated hospital ward, stock market trading room and digital marketing agency, so students can graduate with the skills and knowledge that employers want.

Curtin offers courses across a variety of study areas, including:

Greater Curtin

Greater Curtin is a transformation of the Curtin’s main campus in Perth. The project, designed around a vision for 2030, will develop the campus into a vibrant and diverse community of undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, entrepreneurs and businesses, all in one place.

Greater Curtin aims to enrich students’ study experiences through the construction of new teaching and learning facilities that encourage interactive and collaborative learning, and the refurbishment of existing learning spaces. In addition, it aims to make Bentley campus the epicentre of research and innovation with new, dedicated research facilities being built as part of the project. This means access to more world-class facilities and collaboration opportunities.
